I have removed the number of raised beds to make way for my new polytunnel.

The 10ft by 20ft polytunnel take the space used by 4 4ft by 8ft raised beds.

So I have re numbered my raised beds.

Raised Bed A – Outside – Rhubarb and Asparagus – Plus Courgette
Raised Bed B – Outside
Raised Bed C – Outside
Raised Bed D – Outside – Double height – made from spare raised bed
Raised Bed E – Outside – has Strawberries
Raised Bed F – Outside
Raised Bed G – Outside – Double height – made from spare raised bed
Raised Bed H – Outside – May become strawberry/fruit rasied bed

I’m still building my poly tunnel and need to see the frame completed before deciding which raised beds will be installed in it.

I’ve been dissappointed in my self for not keeping up this blog. But the results from my squarefoot gardens has been very good and there is still plenty of winter crops left.

The weather has been poor the last two summers with heavy rain falls and Blight. So I have decided to give up 4 of my raised beds and buy a Polytunnel. The “spare raised beds” wil be used to deepen the remaining beds. One of the problems I had was the Turnips grew through the weed matting and buried themselves another 6inches below ground level, by making a number of raised beds 12 inches deep I should over come this problem. Also whilst the crops of potatoes I harvest from a mere 6inches of soil was good, I’m hoping another 6inches will greatly increase the yield.

The summers been wet and humid.

Potato blight has struck again.

I’ve been laid up with a bad back for over a month.

I’ve lost my mobile phone that has all my pictures on.

They are no excusses for  not posting more, but just facts of life.

Dispite the bad news, we have general had a good year growing vegetables in our raised beds.

Having come back to the site after 4 months. I’m surpised at the number of visitors to the site over 2000 every month. That puts even more pressure on me to keep the site upto date.

As autumn starts to kick in and the days get colder and shorter, alot of the plants have started to die off and working so short periods I have been clearing up the raised beds.

Winter/Spring cabbages/ cauliflowers have all been planted. Late potatoes have also been planted.

The kids came back from school with a pack of pumkin seeds. I planted a few in the raised bed on the patio and they took over half of the patio, like triffids. We got two small pumkins.

One of the jobs that I really wanted to do but failed was to put a wooden fence up to stop the chickens getting to the raised beds and digging them up.

Some how we ended up with two ducks to go with the four chickens. They didn’t get on with the chickens so had to get them a separte duck house. However, the chickens seem to like the duck house and when the escape from their area  try and take over the duck house.

Whilist beening laid up, I though I would start a garden directory. I will be building a list of useful garden links and possible move over some of the detail of this site to the directoryand just use this as a long for my squarefoot gardening.

The directory will have a garden club which will be a better way of interacting together. It has a basic Instant Message facility and hoefully next month with have a “garden” Twitter facility. So gardeners can communicate better with other gardens .

Gardening club users will be able to sumbit their own gardening links and let other users review and comment on them ask questions and general have fun.  I will be adding new sections over the next month or two ready for the next growing season.

Checked water levels, topped up with water ( 5ltrs), checked PH and EC levels.

Adjusted PH to 7 (neutral). The EC level was initially to high but now correct.

Checked that the values work by lifting pots to ensure there is water in the trays.

Alot has happened on this raised bed over the last two months.

I’ve sown 6 squares of lettuce, transplanted 2 squares of winter cos and sown 8 squares of carrots. Unfortunately the chickens raided the bed and sorta mixed up the lettuce and destroyed some of the carrots.

I’ve added a 8 ft cane frame for the runner beans and a 5ft cane frame for the peas.
