Diary of Square Foot Garden Raised Bed H – Jan 09
Last Month Raised Bed H – Dec 08
11 Jan 08
Since covering the raised bed on 30 Dec 08 with a plastic cloche it has been freezing and the soil has frozen. However, yesterday it started getting milder and the soil unfroze quickly. This morning the soil was cool and only the edges still frozen, but my uncovered raised beds were frozen and had a light covering of white frost on them.
To day was a lot milder +9c instead of -2c but very windy. The wind blew the cloche off of the raised bed and damaged one of the loops.
The loop was fixed by inserting a piece of cane in the tube.
As the cloche was now blowing in the wind I decided that as it wasn’t covering the bed it was time to plant some seeds. I sown 4 squares of the same type of vegetable.
Also covered the bed with a piece of fleece that I had, so will be double insulated.
Fleece blowing in the wind and didn’t cover Squares H1-H8 but its all I had at the time. Weather is forecasted to be wet and mild to mid week which should help warm up the soil. I have ordered more fleece and have some ideas but that will have to wait until later.
Raised Bed now double insulated and pined down as well as addition house bricks added to try and stop the cloche from flying off in the wind.
The sowing wasn’t planned it was getting late so simply grabbed my box of seeds and looked for vegetables that could be sown in January / February.
I had to add about 40ltrs of compost, hence need to have own supply of compost to reduce the costs.
The seeds were planted across the bed, without thought to their final size. I need to think more; the larger plants should have been in the middle with the smaller plants on the sides so that they would fit better under the cloche.
I’m not sure if I planted anything in squares J21-J24 only time with tell.

Strong winds last night blow off and damage the cloche. The white fleece has been replaced with Haxnicks Eco Green fleece. No sign of life yet.
